Red Mesa Cantina

After a week of holiday cooking (and the subsequent cleaning) I was ready to treat myself to a nice dinner out on the town. And to veer as far away from holiday food as possible, J. and I decided on Mexican at Red Mesa Cantina in downtown St. Petersburg.

Red Mesa Cantina (not to be confused with Red Mesa or Red Mesa Mercado) has a very modern, eclectic take on Mexican cuisine. The style is perfect for downtown St. Pete with a large open patio area and dark urban interior. The atmosphere is casual and fun, definitely a great place to go on a Friday or Saturday night.

I started off with a classic margarita on the rocks and chips and salsa. The margarita was perfect, not overly sweet, and the chips were warm, crisp, and salty. Their salsa is addictive, not too chunky, and has a great heat level (those who are spicy-sensitive, beware!)

I treated myself to the El Gordo burrito. Appropriately named – when this burrito came out I burst out laughing at how big it was! It was stuffed with chicken, gallo pinto (beans and rice), jack cheese and pico de gallo – topped with jalapeño cream sauce, pico de gallo and queso fresco. Definitely a messy knife and fork type of meal, but absolutely worth it. The chicken was tender, rice was cooked perfectly, and the sauce was creamy and smooth to dip every bite into. Every item would have been great just served on its own – but together created an amazing dish. I amazed J. (and myself) by eating every last bite.

We finished the meal with an order of churros. They were served still piping hot with sides of a dulce de leche and chocolate sauce. If you didn’t think churros could be any more decadent – think again, these sauces brought it to a whole new level.

Other more unique items on their menu include duck tacos, a chocolate and plantain chimichanga, and a hibiscus cinnamon margarita. But whether you stay a little safer, or branch out to try something completely new – Red Mesa Cantina will not disappoint.

Make sure to check out their brunch on Saturdays and Sundays too!

Until next time!
