In Clearwater, right next door to my favorite Chicago style pizza place, is this quaint English Pub, Grind House. In the past, I have stopped inside to grab a drink while I’ve waited for my pizza order, but a few weeks ago J. and I (along with a couple friends) headed out there for dinner and to watch one of the Lightning playoff games.
The inside is small, and dimly lit, the kind of atmosphere you’d expect from a British pub. There is long wooden bar across from several intimate booths leading into the back. The back is a bit more “sports bar” like with normal tables, arcade games, and TVs along the wall.
For dinner I got their Lobster & Shrimp Bisque and Steak and Ale Pie. The bisque was creamy and heavy, with nice size chunks of shellfish in there, with hints of sweetness from the lobster. It was so filling I almost didn’t have room for my meal. The Steak and ale pie was made with braised steak and onions in a thick Guinness gravy sauce and topped with a crisp and fluffy pastry. The gravy was a perfect consistency and not overly salty. It paired well with the sweetness of the onions and the texture of the pastry. The Guinness gravy was also delicious to dip my fries into.
J. got their Sheperd’s Pie. Classically made, all the flavors of the ground beef and vegetables melded together into one delicious bite. The fluffy potatoes were also topped with a ton of cheese! Yum!
They stay busy with different events and food specials every night – including trivia and karaoke! The owner, being such a big Lightning fan, even had a special just for customers in their fan gear. Very friendly atmosphere, you know this is the kind of place where they know the regular’s names.
On top of everything else, the owner is also a classically trained chef. So if you’re in the mood for a fun night and some classic British favorites, definitely head over to Grind House!
Until next time!
